Good morning bloggers,
We have an interesting weather day unfolding in the next 12 hours, well interesting for 2012. It is too similar to our last snow event to get me very excited about this at the moment. A system will be strengthening and organizing aloft as it approaches us this evening. Bands of precipitation will form later this afternoon, but temperatures will likely be warming up into the 40s before the precipitation forms. Rain will be the first type of precipitation with a change over to snow most likely in the lighter blue shade below:
There is a wave of energy aloft that appears it won’t quite get it’s act together until it is east of the state line. The last very light snow event we had did produce an inch from around Blue Springs, MO eastward. Let’s see how this evolves this evening. The snowflake contest will go deep into February if this forms as I have shown on the map above. We still have to watch this closely tonight as the disturbance drops in over Kansas and tracks into Missouri.
Have a great Friday. Thanks for stopping by the Action Weather Blog. We will be tracking these developments on NBC Action News all day.
Gary

Will you be on the news tonight wearing the snow vest?
Two things: 1) I will likely not be wearing my snow vest, and 2) I have the day off.
My goodness. It is still an interesting day, but I am not going to stress out about it. Let’s see how this comes together this afternoon and evening.
Well thank you for responding, have a great day off and I certainly hope this storm gets it’s act together so we can end this contest! Regardless, TGIF!
So Gary when u say deep in to Feduary are u saying thats when are next chance of snow is. Late Febuary
First of all, let’s monitor this evening very closely. Secondly we will be moving up the historic list of latest first snows by February 5th, which is the fifth latest first snow date in KC recorded history. Nothing is showing up.
wow…deep into February? Might as well go for the record of no snow and bring on severe weather/thunderstorm season.
I’ll tell my kids years from now how I survived the winter of 2012. I’ll tell them I had to walk 6.5 miles through 55 degree weather or how I had to golf every weekend in January.
Wish there was a LIKE button!
C’mon Man!
I blame my son for this lack of snow! He is a Junior in high school and they are leaving on a band trip the Tuesday after Memorial Day. So if there are any snow days he (and the rest of the bad) would not have to make them up. Next year he will graduate so he would not have to make those snow days up as well. He was all excited and I told him watch, there will not be any snow days now.
Hey Gary so when will the rain start an when will it turn in to snow?
There are some sprinkles now, but any possibility of snow mixing in would likely be after sunset.
hey r-dub… i saw that sunrise this morning too and thought it looked like one of those patented arizona sunsets. awesome.
Yeah, I rushed back out with a camera to take a pic, but it never seems like the camera can capture how awesome it was.
I saw it too. I wish I would have gotten pictures with the dogs. It was a vibrant red color.
Also saw the sunrise this morning and you are absolutely right… Beautiful. Gary, with your expert opinion do you honestly think we will get a “snow storm” this year? Based on the already set up LRC, when is the next BIG storm showing up?? I work at the less summit super target and we have a ton of sleds on clearance that aren’t going to be bought! We just need one good storm and they’ll all be gone. Any guess at when/if we could see some real snow?
Nothing showing up yet. The pattern may increase in amplitude in the next ten days. Let’s see if anything starts showing up.
I believe Gary is correct, I feel our best chances of snow to be in March or even early April
The short version: We have no idea so let’s NOWCAST. In other words you will know when we know. Our best chance of snow will be next winter. Enjoy your day off Gary.
I’m getting light sleet up by the airport at I-29 and Tiffany Springs, so sleet then rain, then possibly snow?
Sleeting at 71 and 435s
snowing lightly in st jo
It was snowing pretty hard here at KCI about 10 minutes ago. Now all rain
Light precip of almost any kind is possible, mixing, changing back and forth, etc. Just too warm to accumulate much, at least on the south side of town. 39 here.
Interesting weather day indeed Gary. About 30 minutes ago I looked up at the misting sky and saw Mammatus Clouds here in Oskaloosa. I don’t remember ever seeing them in January around here in my life. Wish I would have had my camera, the camera phone didn’t do a good job at all of snapping a pic. Feels like late Feb/early March outside.
Ok Gary, we are having a debate at the office today… On Monday in your blog you have a quote: “Kansas City will have the lowest snow total in recorded history. There will not be one inch of snow”. Is this your prediction. I have said no but they are saying it is your quote. Please end this debate!
Snowing off and on very lightly here in St. Joe.
Hey, I can say I appreciate this winter so far because I usually have to put away my motorcycle for 3 months or more in storage, but this season I have been able to pull it out and ride about every 10 days or so. Another thing: I am seeing some snow or precipitation activity coming toward us next Friday and Saturday, the 3rd and 4th of February. Maybe this will be our best bet to get out the sleds and dust off the shovels!!!
Is the dusting to an inch forecast for the immediate metro? If it snows an inch in St. Joe does that count as a “accurate” forecast?
No no no no no no. No amplitude!! Flat flat flat
Just like I KNEW. NO SNOW. JUST WISHCAST!!
People wake up. Listen to muku, mowermike, etc….
1″ in December
so nothing showing up un esp. Is there something the weather team sees to warrent a adusting to an inch?
becakrelli,
Our storm spotter in Trenton, MO is reporting 1/2″ on the grass and slush/wet on the roads. It is not that far from KC. We will see a few rain/sleet/snow showers until 8 PM.
Jeff
GOD I am so disappointed in this winter!
I honestly don’t think we’ll see very much snow this year and MUCH less that 4.5″ for sure! If and/or when that happens, it had BETTER be on the NATIONAL news too as well!
“Kansas City, which on average usually sees around 25 inches of snow a winter, didn’t even get HALF OF AN INCH of snow officially this season! Now talk about strange! This really was, the Year Without a Winter.”
hey Gary just wondering there this strange white stuff on the ground in st Joseph can you explain to us bloggers what this may be .thanks
IS THE WEATHER GOING TO IMPACT DRIVING TONIGHT?
In Leavenworth we had a few sprinkles and thats all. Then poof
